House mark

A stem with crossbars, struts and chevrons, each named by its place. In many places a house mark belonged to the house or farm rather than to one person, and on Rügen it stayed with the house when it was sold or inherited. It looks like a rune and is not one: nineteenth century scholars saw runes in it, twentieth century nationalists made a myth of it, and no line of descent has ever been shown.
